The place was dirty and needed to be cleaned, in between customers; the young lady that was taking orders just stood around the counter instead of cleaning tables when customers left. I had porkchop dinner with greens and Mac and cheese the chop was excellent the greens were excellent the Mac was an attack on my texture senses and tastes buds some kind of oily powdered cheese concoction I didn't like it. My girl got the pasta with shrimp and absolutely loved it the banana pudding was a definite no it was horrid. I drove 30 mine to get to the place because I wanted the oxtails which they were out of for the day at 5pm when you close at 9 sounds like better management is needed anyway that's my take on things I hope this helps.

I told the server (possibly she was the owner) that I would be honest about the food. My husband had the ultimate cheeseburger, although it was large he thought the amount of seasoning salt took away from actually tasting the burger. I was disappointed with the oxtails, they were very tender yet the gravy tasted scorched to me, the rice didn’t have any flavor to me and too many carrots. The collard greens weren’t bad, they had a little kick to it, could have used a little bit salt. For the price of food, it was over a 40 minute wait, I am not sure that I would be back

The food is good here, with their own spin on taste. I recommend the green beans and yams <- they were flavorful, I was skeptical on the Basa but it turned out to be delightful just would suggest asking them to fry it hard if you're that person that don't like soft fried fish. Another viewer didnt like the oxtails and rice however my mother and i thought it was good and great amt for price. Overall great with people and it seem to be a family owned kind of establishment. A smile goes a long way with customer service I felt the son at the register slack with that a bit but they where respectful and brought our meals to us as we dined in. The restaurant was empty but filled as 12-1pm hit(4 /5 customers in line). Food didn't take to long to come out. Maybe 10-15mins. Oxtails meal w/ yams on side and banana pudding was $40, fish and fries and drink came to abt $18 with tip 3 people was abt 75-$80. I came to try the place out because of a review that was shared to me through Facebook. 1st time customer and I would go back.

Today was my first time visiting this restaurant and the food didn't disappoint. The wait was a little longer than I expected but considering all the orders they had to fill I understand the long wait. Good soul food just like back home in Mississippi. I should be in Kansas for another month and I plan on going back every Sunday. 5 stars all the way around‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️

Visiting KCMO from California, my SFL had 1930's on our to-go list. This restaurant was one of our best experiences. I am not sure which was more pleasing... the background story of the family traditions with the healing properties in some of the ingredients or the food itself.
Free was there and greeted us each time with excellent customer service. The relaxed ambience was quite quaint with good vibes. We ordered the tackle box (2 chicken wings, 3 stripes of fish, 3 shrimps served with a side of fried okra), lemon pepper wings, and oxtails. We chose greens and Mac as our sides (not my favorites). Yes, there was a wait, but anyone who cooks should know that true soul food takes time.
Everything was descent. However... although the Basa was divine, delicious. The oxtails were the show stoppers. So tender and seasoned to perfection. I am not a fan of dirty rice but I must say I enjoyed the buttery flavor that dripped into it from the meat.
And I almost forgot to mention the banana pudding... it is not typical, it has a distinct and pleasant flavor. It is very refreshing. A nice pallet cleanser and tasty treat.
There was even a backdrop for photo taking.
(And the bathroom was very clean.)
We had such a wonderful time here that we gave Free a new name... "Mr. Wonderful"

Outstanding food and service. All the sandwiches and burgers are delicious, the salmon burger has a large piece of beautifully cooked salmon, not even fishy-tasting. Fried fish is perfect, ribs are fantastic. We love the collard greens, cabbage & yams, too. The cheesesteaks are my favorite. We've tried basically everything on the menu, it's all great soul food. The owner is a good guy, support this local business!

Greens, onion rings, philly cheese, peach cobbler were all FIRE! I’m coming back and hopefully they will have some banana pudding next time! Portions are huge so come hungry!

If I could give this place 0 stars, I would. My wife and I both ordered the chicken wings—unfortunately, they were extremely oily and had no real flavor. We also got the oxtails, which were full of fat and tasted like they were just boiled in plain water—no seasoning, no taste, just old and unpleasant. My wife had the shrimp, and they were way too salty. We ordered a peach cobbler for dessert, and it was watery and completely flavorless. To make things worse, there was a dead fly sitting in the window—completely unacceptable and unsanitary. The only positive part of our visit was the friendly cashier. But overall, this was a disappointing and uncomfortable dining experience. Definitely would not recommend.
