The people who worked here are very incompetent and rude. They only care about money. We bought an old house that needed minor permit. But the city is making things difficult by not giving us permit. Went back and forth with them dozen of times just trying to get a certificate of compliance for our house. No wonder no one want to live here. People who have money would never open business or build a family here if the city is being difficult. As a new homeowner, I don't want to live here anymore.

This is a place where American dream dies. The place looke great and comfortable luxury thanks to our taxes. But not even one decent person works here. They tread people very poorly and charge a lot of fees for simple projects. First they get your money and then make you run around like a headless chicken? For boughs reason even though they are in this city and have all the information at their fingertips. I think they work very slow and very little, just to belittle people so they can feel big. Shame

If I can give zero star I would. City is only car about asking owner for more money, and anyway they can get more money by creating needless tasks for owner, contractor, subs, designer, architect and engineer. Lower level tech staffs don't really understand anything. Nothing is about "building and safety." And they don't realize they work for the people.

Warning! I own three business, one in Torrance, another in Newport Beach and one in El Monte. Sadly I am thinking about moving the EL Monte business somewhere else. Why because the city is intentionally making it difficult for any business to legally operate or they hire incompetent workers from the lowest levels to the highest. I am a mild tempered and patient individual, I respect everyone and dignify them but the people don’t care about that. They are rude, they lack knowledge and nobody is held accountable. If you decide to operate in this city keep this in mind.

Because the City of El Monte has created rules that limit the number of homes on a lot (a large lot) and they require "inspections" prior to a sale completion looking for "unpermitted" work, they make it VERY difficult to sell an older home. They require permits to be purchased then inspected by them ($$$) for changes made before permits were required for that change. There is no inclusion for grandfathering of any kind. It does not matter if permits were not required at the time....you will be paying for them, demolishing and reconstructing to current codes or being told-after you pay-that sink or toilet you installed is ok. A sink! A toilet! It is a huge fishing trip to increase the city coffers. Apparently only the cities of El Monte, Hawthorne and Pasadena do this. Greed pure and simple.

This place is a joke, all the workers that work here have no idea how to do their job. It's ridiculous how one worker says one thing then another says something different just so you keep wasting time coming back to redo the same thing over and over. Trying to permit an existing structure of an old house is a nightmare with these people, they have no clue how to do the work they are given and they never know how to help with questions that need to be answered.
