I’m a contractor, but thankfully deal with this office infrequently. I do not have business with any other building department that lacks the ability/inclination to communicate with each other to get a permit processed. You would think they had never heard of email. Not a new situation for EDC building department.

Had a scheduled inspection waited on the job for 9 hrs and no inspector!!! No phone call!!! Tried calling them about 50 times throughout the day and the line was busy all day. This building department is a JOKE. You're better off getting your own personal inspector who won't waste your time. I will never do a permit in El dorado hills again. If my business treated people like a government organization such as this one I would be bankrupt.

I came in for a permit to install some push piers on one of my foundation repair projects and was directed over to Ben Wehrle. He was very patient, professional and helpful throughout the whole process. I deal with quite a bit of permit techs and inspectors through out most of Northern California and I can honestly say this is one of the smoothest permit processing I have experienced. Can't even get in contact with a human. Yikes. They make you use E-Trackit for figuring out times, but they don't even honor their own time listings. Just had an inspector who was scheduled for PM show up at 9 when I wasn't there, wake up the sleeping baby by ringing the doorbell, and didn't come back for the correct time. I deal with a lot of building departments, and this is amongst the worst, even worse than Marin County, who is notorious for being a pain to deal with. I tried calling them on a separate occasion to give them the gate code for the neighborhood the house is in, and of course I could get ahold of nobody to relay this information. We failed the inspection because the inspector couldn't get to the house. How am I supposed to get this information to them? Do I sit by the neighborhood entrance gate like a creep?

Yes they are slow but it is necessary. Some more people writing permits would be an excellent decision for the county. That being said, Mary and Janice are two of the most helpful people I have ever met. The process takes a good amount of time but they do have some cool stuff to look at while you wait. While I wait I usually talk to some people in the lobby and learn some cool stuff. They get all kinds of crazy people that go through that place.

My wife and I built our own house 13 years ago and the process was quite easy with the county, we were able to talk to an inspector most anytime we needed to via the telephone when we had questions.
We're currently adding a detached garage and had no problems in the planning process and inspections have been easy. The eTrackit system is convenient but new to me. It seems to work fine most of the time and when it doesn't it's possible that it's my lack of understanding how to navigate it. I've seen many applicants and customers get really upset and frustrated at the process and behave in truly unacceptable ways towards the employees of the department. I believe in many cases they're just that type of person who presents everyone with that kind of attitude. Like I said I've always been treated fairly there and the laws, codes and regulations just are what they are.

The slowest public agency I have ever experienced. Yes, worse than the DMV on a Saturday. Always at least a 1 hour wait time for "walk in" appointments but likely more, or you can schedule an appointment (at their convenience) a week or so out. Where the rest of the country is moving to highly efficient self-service online processes, the El Dorado County building department has mastered the art of inefficient, bureaucratic, logic defying, paper pushing time wasting. Should you need help in understanding "the process" or have a question, the front desk receptionists will make sure to be as unhelpful as possible and look at you like you're bothering them. But, if you want to build anything, you have no choice but to comply.

This building department is the worst I've been to when it comes to wait time. You can walk in before they open and not be seen until 1pm. And don't bother trying for an appointment, often times the next available is over a month out. It's as if they don't want people to do any business in their county. I have seen worse funded building departments who serve more people that are faster.
